Amazing Things To Do In Kuching Sarawak Malaysia. Being the largest state in Malaysia, Sarawak is one of the two states situated on the island of Borneo, the third-largest island in the world and the largest island in Asia. Antipodal to an area of Amazon rainforest, Borneo is itself one of the oldest rainforest and it’s famous as the Orangutan habitant. The state also exhibits notable diversity in ethnicity, culture and language as the state population comprises of Malays, Chinese, Indians and a number of native tribes like Iban, Dayak and so on.

The capital city of this interesting state of Malaysia is Kuching with the locals fondly calling the city as ‘Cat City’. What makes Kuching a wonderful place for visitors as well their residents are probably the many places to visit and some interesting facts like Kuching being the cleanest and healthiest city in Malaysia and being the origin of the famous three-layered tea!

Places to visit in Kuching

Kuching Waterfront – The Kuching Waterfront is known as the first sight James Brooke arrived in Sarawak. The government pumped in huge sums of money in reconstruction of the Kuching Waterfront as well as reclaiming sections of the riverside which were formally docking areas for small boats that villagers used for crossing the river. Today, it is a superb landscape along the length of Sarawak River with some entertainment areas and eateries. There is an observation tower, sculptures and some historical buildings in the area.

Kuching Waterfront

Padungan – Dubbed as the oldest shopping district in Kuching, most notably is the famous Cat statues on the roundabouts of the Padungan Road leading to the waterfront area. Meoowww~~~

Old Sarawak Museum – It is the most ancient museum in Borneo which was supported by the 2nd Rajah called Charles Brooke. It was officially opened in the year 1891 for displaying native crafts and arts. It is currently renovated with some extras incorporated to its structure. It houses an impressive collection of historical data of Borneo and several tribal artefacts.

Old Sarawak Museum

Cat Museum – Kuching the cat city does justice to its name as it houses a cat museum located in Bukit Siol that is at Petra Jaya that is across the river. Feline lovers will experience heaven here as it has an invaluable collection of cat memorabilia. These range from Garfield, Matthew Finder’s cat to Hello Kitty. Visitors will relish observing the photos and exhibits of each and every cat. They might even collect afew souvenirs that are available at the gift shop.

Kuching City Mosque – A mosque made of wood material was built in 1852 but was later demolished to give room for the construction of the Kuching Mosque in the year 1968. It is a combination of Italian and mid-western architecture. It is a significant landmark in Kuching city.

Friendship Garden – It is located in Tabuan Heights and was built as a symbol of friendship for China and Malaysia. The landscaped garden is characterized by wishing wells, Chinese buildings and several ponds. A majority of the ponds are filled with koi fish and depend on the public to give food to the fishes. There is a huge statue depicting Admiral Cheng Ho (a Chinese eunuch of great military power) and several interesting structures.

Friendship Garden

Kuching Civic Centre – This is a tall structure with a roof that resembles a shiny umbrella. Tourists can get an excellent bird’s eye view of the entire city from the building’s viewing platform which is located on the top most floor. The building also has a gym, afew food stalls and a function hall.

Sunday Market

Sunday Market – This is a weekly air market located on Jalan Satok and is operational from Saturday afternoon through to Sunday afternoon. The stalls at the market offers an array of l produce got locally such as local delicacies, snacks, fruits, meat, fish, plants, eggs, vegetables, accessories, jungle produce, clothings, local craft items, fashion items and toys. Afew sellers at the market are natives who come from Sarawak’s rural areas. They travel all the way from their villages located in the jungles that have rainforests to Kuching city all weekends to sell produce from the jungle at the famous Sunday Market. A good number of them camp throughout the night at the Sunday Market on Saturday and proceed with sales the next day. The urban traders use tables to exhibit their items while tribal sellers spread their jungle produce on the ground.
